Guides
How often should you really do it?
Short, sourced answers for the things that come around again — pet care, home filters, the car, and your own routines. Each guide starts with the answer, then the how-to, the usual mistakes and a way to remember.
Pet care, on schedule
Deworming, heartworm prevention, vaccines, fluids at home, nails, baths and litter. For anything medical we only cover keeping records and reminders — the schedule itself always comes from your vet.
How often should you change cat litter?
Scoop at least daily. Replace clumping litter every 1–4 weeks and non-clumping litter about weekly — plus how many boxes, how deep, and how to wash the tray.
How often should you deworm and flea-treat cats and dogs?
Deworming depends on risk: ESCCAP advises at least 4 times a year when risk is unclear, up to monthly. Flea and tick control runs all year. Ask your vet.
How often do cats and dogs need vaccines?
Kittens and puppies need a series of shots; adult core vaccines are often boosted every 3 years, shorter-lasting ones yearly, and rabies follows local law.
How often do cats need subcutaneous fluids?
There’s no standard schedule for subQ fluids in cats: your vet sets how often and how much. How to follow the plan at home, what to log and mistakes to avoid.
How often is heartworm prevention given?
Heartworm prevention is usually monthly (chewable or topical) or an injection every 6 or 12 months, given year-round, plus a yearly test for dogs.
How often should you bathe a dog?
Most healthy dogs need a bath every 1–3 months; bathing too often can irritate skin. Plus low-shedding breeds, puppies, water temperature and medicated baths.
How often should you trim your cat’s or dog’s nails?
Most indoor cats need a nail trim every 2–4 weeks and most dogs about once a month. How to tell nails are too long, avoid the quick, and stop bleeding.
Home upkeep: filters, sheets and appliances
Air purifier and air conditioner filters, dehumidifiers, water filter cartridges, bedding, the fridge and the washing machine — how often, and how to tell when it’s time.
How often should you change an air purifier filter?
Main HEPA and carbon filters last from about 6 months to 2 years depending on the model, so follow the filter light. Keep the pre-filter clean in between.
How often should you clean an air conditioner filter?
Clean a split (ductless) AC filter about every two weeks in heavy use and check central air filters monthly. How to wash it, dry it, and avoid common mistakes.
How often should you wash your sheets and pillowcases?
Wash sheets and pillowcases weekly, every two weeks at most. Plus duvets, comforters and pillows, the water temperature for dust mites, and when to replace.
How often should you change a water filter cartridge?
Change a water filter by its gallon or month rating, whichever comes first: about every 4 weeks to 2 months for jugs, and 6–12 months for RO system stages.
How often should you clean a dehumidifier filter?
Clean a dehumidifier filter about every two weeks, or every 250 hours of running, and wash the bucket every few weeks to stop mold. Step-by-step care for both.
How often should you clean a washing machine?
Run a tub-clean cycle about once a month or when the reminder light comes on. Plus front-load vs. top-load care, the door seal, drain filter and musty smells.
How often should you clean your fridge?
Wipe spills right away, clear out old food weekly and deep clean about once a month. Plus the right fridge temperature, what to clean with, odors and leftovers.
Car and scooter maintenance
Oil changes for cars and scooters, tire pressure, rotation and replacement. The owner’s manual has the final say; these guides help you read it and keep track.
How often should you change scooter or motorcycle oil?
Small scooters need fresh oil every 1,000–3,000 km (600–2,000 miles) or 1–3 months, and the first change comes early. Plus gear oil, the dipstick and EVs.
How often should you change your car’s oil?
Most cars need new oil every 5,000–10,000 miles or 6–12 months, whichever comes first — sooner for short trips and towing. Plus synthetic oil and the dipstick.
How often should you check tire pressure, rotate and replace tires?
Check tire pressure monthly and before long trips, rotate every 6,000–8,000 miles, and replace at 2/32 inch (1.6 mm) of tread or 10 years after manufacture.
Health and personal care routines
Toothbrush heads, dental check-ups and the other personal routines that are easy to let slide.
How often should you replace your toothbrush or brush head?
Replace a manual toothbrush every 3–4 months, sooner if the bristles fray; electric brush heads about every 3 months. Plus after being sick and how to store it.
How often should you get a dental cleaning and check-up?
Every six months is the habit, but the NHS and ADA say your dentist should set the interval by risk — from 3 months to 2 years under NHS guidance.
