Short answer
How often should you change an air purifier filter?
It depends on the model. Blueair recommends a new filter about every 6 months, Levoit lists 6–8 months for some of its filters, and Sharp says its long-life True HEPA filter lasts up to 2 years. Follow your manual and the filter light, replace sooner in polluted air, and keep the pre-filter clean in between.
Typical intervalEvery 6–24 months, by model
Two jobs: cleaning and replacing
An air purifier needs two kinds of care: regular cleaning of the surface dust, and replacing the main filter when it’s used up. The first is quick and frequent; the second can be months or years apart, depending on the model.
| Filter | What to do | How |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-filter (catches hair and large dust) | Clean regularly | Vacuum it; wash only if the label or manual says it’s washable, and let it dry fully |
| HEPA (particle) filter | Replace when due | Don’t wash. Some brands allow a light vacuum of the surface; others say not to clean it at all |
| Activated carbon (odor) filter | Replace when due | Follow the manual — on many units it’s combined with the main filter and replaced with it |
The US EPA’s consumer guide puts it simply: all filters need regular replacement, and a filter that is dirty and overloaded won’t work well.
How often to replace the main filter
There is no single number — check your own model. A few manufacturers’ figures:
| Brand / model | Main filter replacement |
|---|---|
| Blueair | About every 6 months; the filter light comes on after six months of continual use |
| Levoit (Vital 100 filter) | Every 6–8 months |
| Sharp (long-life True HEPA) | Up to 2 years, depending on the environment |
| Panasonic Taiwan (F-P50LH / F-P60LH) | About 2 years until the replacement light comes on |
The spread comes from filter size, materials and design, plus how many hours a day the unit runs and how dirty the air is. Blueair says that in a highly polluted environment you need to change the filter more often, and Sharp’s and Panasonic’s figures both depend on conditions. If your purifier runs all day near a busy road or in a smoky home, plan on the short end of the range.
How to clean the pre-filter
Blueair’s advice for its fabric pre-filters is to vacuum them with a soft brush attachment whenever you do a big clean or see dust building up, and to machine-wash them (following the label) when you replace the main filter, about every 6 months. Panasonic’s Taiwan support page for two of its models goes further, telling owners to vacuum the HEPA filter surface about every two weeks. A quick routine that works for most units:
- Switch the purifier off and unplug it.
- Take out the pre-filter and check the manual to see which layers can be washed.
- Vacuum off the dust, or wash a washable pre-filter as the label says.
- Let anything you washed dry completely before it goes back in. Blueair says to hang its fabric pre-filters to dry.
- Wipe the dust off the intake grille and any sensor openings while it’s open — Panasonic suggests a dry cloth or a vacuum for the sensor holes.
Common mistakes
- Rinsing the HEPA filter: water can damage the filter media. It may look cleaner, but it filters worse.
- Leaving the plastic bag on a new filter: Panasonic specifically reminds owners to take a new filter out of its bag before fitting it.
- Forgetting to reset the filter light: on Panasonic’s units, for example, the replacement timer only restarts when you reset it, so a skipped reset means the next reminder comes at the wrong time.
- Blocking the airflow: the EPA recommends keeping air cleaners away from curtains and anything else that might block airflow.
- Judging by the outside: lower airflow and a louder fan are better signs that the filter needs attention than how clean the case looks.
How to remember
The pre-filter clean is quick but easy to postpone, and the main filter swap is so far apart that the date is long gone from memory by the time it’s due. Tracking “clean purifier filter” as a recurring item keeps the short rhythm going, and adding a note when you fit a new main filter — with the filter’s model number — means you’ll know what to order next time.
Most homes have more than one filter on a schedule. Your air conditioner and dehumidifier have their own (see how often to clean an AC filter and how often to clean a dehumidifier filter), and a water filter cartridge is another part that never looks dirty but still runs out.
Keep track of it with Againday
Cleaning the pre-filter takes five minutes, which is exactly why it gets put off. The main filter swap comes around so rarely that nobody remembers which month the current one went in.
- Add a new item called “Clean air purifier filter” and set How Often to “Every 2 weeks”.
- Give it the tag “Home” so you can filter it with related items.
- Set its reminder time to 10:00 AM. You’ll get one notification on the day it’s due.
- Put it in a shared list such as “Home”. Whoever does it marks it done, and everyone sees who did it.
- When it’s done, tap the cycle ring to mark it done. Forgot to log it? Add a past date from the item’s page.
- Add a note to each entry, for example: “New HEPA filter in, filter light reset”.

Frequently asked questions
- Can you wash a HEPA filter?
- Usually not. Blueair says vacuuming or washing its main filters with water can damage the filter media and reduce performance, and Panasonic’s Taiwan support pages say its HEPA filters must not be washed with water. Only wash a filter if the manual says it’s washable — fabric pre-filters often are.
- How often should you change a HEPA filter?
- Anywhere from about 6 months to 2 years, depending on the model. Blueair recommends about every 6 months, Levoit lists 6–8 months for the Vital 100 filter, and Sharp says its long-life True HEPA filter lasts up to 2 years. Replace sooner if the purifier runs all day in polluted air.
- The filter light is on. Can I just clean the filter and keep going?
- No — replace it. The light is the manufacturer’s estimate of when the filter is used up; on Blueair units it comes on after six months of continual use. After fitting the new filter, reset the light as the manual describes, or the next reminder will be off.
- What happens if you don’t change an air purifier filter?
- It stops cleaning the air well. The US EPA says a dirty, overloaded filter won’t work well, and Panasonic’s guidance is to check the filter when airflow drops and the unit gets louder.
