How often should you clean an air conditioner filter? Split, window and central units

Short answer

How often should you clean an air conditioner filter?

It depends on the system. For a wall-mounted split (ductless) unit, clean the washable filter about every two weeks when you use it a lot — LG and Daikin both say so. For central air, ENERGY STAR says to inspect, clean or change the filter once a month, and the EPA notes that manufacturers typically recommend replacing disposable filters every 60–90 days.

Typical intervalSplit: every 2 weeks · Central: check monthly

How often, by type of air conditioner

How often you clean the filter depends mostly on what kind of air conditioner you have and how hard it’s working. Wall-mounted split (ductless) and window units have a washable mesh filter you clean and reuse; central air systems usually have a disposable filter you replace.

Type How often What the manufacturer or agency says
Split / ductless (wall-mounted) About every 2 weeks in heavy use LG: every two weeks during heavy summer use. Daikin: every two weeks as a general rule, more often in dusty or polluted places
Window unit Check weekly at peak times Samsung: inspect the filter weekly during peak use and clean it once a week in summer
Central air Check monthly; replace disposable filters when due ENERGY STAR: inspect, clean or change the filter once a month. EPA: manufacturers typically recommend replacement every 60–90 days

LG adds that the right frequency depends on usage and environment. In a mild month when the AC barely runs, you can stretch it — but give the filter a clean before the first hot week of the season.

How to clean a washable filter

This works for most split and window units; check your manual for how the filter comes out.

  1. Turn the unit off and disconnect the power.
  2. Open the front panel and slide the filter out.
  3. Rinse it under lukewarm or cold running water with a soft brush. LG suggests a soft sponge and a little neutral detergent for stubborn buildup.
  4. Let it dry completely in the shade, somewhere with good airflow.
  5. Slide it back in until it clicks, close the panel and switch the unit back on.

For central air, the job is usually a swap rather than a wash: fit a new filter of the same size, snugly — the EPA notes that a filter should fit so air doesn’t leak around it.

Let it dry before it goes back in

Don’t refit a wet filter. LG’s instructions are explicit: the filter should dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated area before it goes back in. Don’t try to speed it up with the sun or a hair dryer either — LG warns that direct sunlight and heat sources can warp the plastic frame. Washing in the morning and refitting in the afternoon avoids the temptation. If you can’t wait that long, it’s better to run the unit a few hours later than to put a damp filter back in.

What the filter does — and doesn’t — do

An AC filter mostly protects the air conditioner. The EPA points out that window and wall-mounted ductless units are built for temperature control, and their limited filtration is meant to keep the inside of the unit clean rather than remove fine particles from the air. If you want cleaner air, that’s the job of an air purifier, which has its own filter schedule.

What a clean filter does do is save energy. Daikin says swapping a blocked filter for a clean one can lower an air conditioner’s energy use by 5% to 15%, and Samsung lists low cooling and weaker air circulation as the problems a dirty filter brings.

Common mistakes

  • Hot water or sun-drying: both can warp or melt the plastic frame.
  • Refitting it damp: wait until it’s completely dry.
  • Scrubbing hard: use a soft brush or sponge on the fine mesh.
  • Taking the indoor unit apart yourself: leave the internals and the condensate drain to the annual professional check-up.
  • Cleaning only the living-room unit: bedroom units run every night in summer and get just as dusty.

How to remember

Every two weeks is easy to plan in June and easy to lose by August, and in a home with several units nobody remembers which ones were done. Tracking “clean AC filters” as a recurring item in a shared list means whoever does it marks it done for everyone, and a note on each entry — which rooms were cleaned — tells the next person where to start.

When the cooling season ends, the dehumidifier often takes over in damp months; its filter needs the same kind of routine (see how often to clean a dehumidifier filter). The washing machine is another appliance that needs regular cleaning in places you never see.

Keep track of it with Againday

The filter sits behind a panel you never look at. With an AC in every bedroom, it’s also hard to keep track of which ones were done.

  1. Add a new item called “Clean AC filters” and set How Often to “Every 2 weeks”.
  2. Give it the tag “Home” so you can filter it with related items.
  3. Set its reminder time to 10:00 AM. You’ll get one notification on the day it’s due.
  4. Put it in a shared list such as “Home”. Whoever does it marks it done, and everyone sees who did it.
  5. When it’s done, tap the cycle ring to mark it done. Forgot to log it? Add a past date from the item’s page.
  6. Add a note to each entry, for example: “Living room and main bedroom done, spare room next time”.

Againday is free for 3 items, with shared lists, widgets and reminders included. Againday Pro is one purchase, not a subscription.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put the AC filter back in while it’s still wet?
No. LG’s instructions are to let the filter dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated spot before reinstalling it. Plan to wash it in the morning and refit it later in the day.
Can I wash an AC filter in hot water or dry it in the sun?
No. LG says to use lukewarm or cold running water, because hot water and direct sunlight can warp or melt the plastic frame of the mesh filter. For stubborn dirt, use a soft sponge with a little neutral detergent.
What happens if you don’t clean your AC filter?
The unit uses more energy and cools less well. Daikin says replacing a blocked filter with a clean one can cut an air conditioner’s energy use by 5% to 15%, and ENERGY STAR warns that a dirty filter raises energy costs and can damage the equipment, leading to early failure.
Do I still need a professional service?
Yes, for the parts you can’t reach. ENERGY STAR recommends an annual pre-season check-up by a contractor — for cooling, in the spring — including the condensate drain, since a plugged drain can cause water damage in the house.
